What is leatherette used for in laser engraving?

Leatherette is a synthetic material designed to mimic real leather while producing clean, high-contrast engraving results.

Will this work for hat patches?

Yes. Laserhyde leatherette and adhesive materials are specifically tested for professional hat patch makers using heat press applications.

Is this a laser safe material?

Yes, all Laserhyde leatherette and adhesive materials are laser safe and offer a Oeko-Tex 100 safety standard certification

What lasers work with this material?

Both CO2 and diode lasers are compatible. For best results, we recommend laser systems above 20 watts. For detailed hat patches, RF tube lasers can provide excellent precision and cleaner fine details.

What do I clean leatherette with?

Our recommended cleaner is a 60 to 40% ratio of LA awesome cleaner/degreaser to water. Lightly spray and wipe with a microfiber towel. Avoid harsh alcohol-based cleaners, as they may damage the top surface or dull the engraved fiber layer.

Does this leatherette have a fabric or foam backing?

We primarily use a premium solid foam backing material for our sheets. In our testing against other competitors who use primarily double fiber layer backing, we found that the cutting results were not as solid as the foam backing, and rigid stability was lacking in a fiber only backed layer. In our patch pull test, we found that the fiber only backing style, peeled off more consistently than our premium solid sponge style backing, which had a better bond to the hat.

How do I find the correct laser engraving settings?

When it comes to leatherette types and colors they all can vary on different lasers, so for the best optimized results we recommend creating a material test in lightburn software to find the best results based on color, lines per inch, power, and speed, see this VIDEO for more info

Occasionally we come across blemished leatherette sheets during inventory unpacking that have minor cosmetic issues, making them unsuitable for full-price sales. While these sheets may show small imperfections, they are still 80% to 95% usable and can be an excellent value for personal engraving projects or as the perfect test material.
